The client, a single professional person living alone, had 'sky-light' access to the roof above their apartment and wanted to open it up and to create there a roof garden for all seasons.
Garden and landscape designers often talk about 'borrowed landscape' and by this they mean taking advantage of features either near, or far, that can be viewed from within a particular garden. In this case, partly due to the elevated position of the space, but also because of the low visual value of the surrounding views, I decided to turn the gaze skywards, to venerate the sky and to invite to unite with this patch of 'terra firma'.
One of the great advantages of this project was the robust nature of the building's construction, and expert opinion quickly established that the roof possessed a higher than usual load bearing capacity.
I chose to use a large area of water, firstly as an obvious way of reflecting the sky, but also to provide a growing environment for aquatic plants that would be both unusual and at the same time, low maintenance. By specifing composite decking and synthetic grass the low maintenance and sustainable elements of this design are greatly enhanced.
Accommodating a hot tub so that it did not dominate the space was tricky, but by moving it away from the 'room' and by separating it with water and by the use of elevated planting, I hope that I was on the right track. Access to the tub will be achieved by 'walking on water', as there will be an almost invisible steel walkway just below the surface of the water.
