In landscape and garden design, as in life, boundaries are extremely important when it comes to defining our space. This space is bounded on one side by the house and on the other three sides by low, poor quality concrete walls. The two sides are over-looked by neighbours, and a light-rail line passes by the end wall. Because of the poor quality of the existing wall it is not possible to extend them, so instead I proposed a solid security fence on the three sides to be erected up against the existing walls. A grove of bamboo and a low wall will not only hide the fence at the end, but will block out the view of the trains, and to some extent their low-level noise. Specialist glass panels will conceal the fence on the two sides.
'White limestone' paving punctuated by narrow strips of 'blue limestone' and low level planting will fill the rest of the space. Composite decking next to the house will provide step free access to the out doors. Lighting will form a crucial role in this garden, as it washes up the glass panels and bounces reflections off the tranquil water.
The Side and Front gardens will be finished in more strips of 'blue limestone' and will act to unify the spaces.
